Powys County Tartan
From the songful land of Wales
About The Powys County Tartan
The Powys County tartan. The County tartan of Powys in Mid Wales, was home to the Cambrian Woollen Mill, weaving traditional Welsh cloth and patterns on the same site since 1820. In the 19th century, Wales was renowned for its growing weaving industry, with well over 100 working mills.
Sadly, there are now less than a dozen working mills in Wales, but you can still buy traditional Welsh woven products at many of the mills, including of course the famous Welsh tartan blankets (picnic rugs/throws). This tartan has a more muted, traditional feel to it, with the colours based on traditional dyeing techniques rather than the modern brighter colours we expect today from chemical dyes.
This tartan is unique and creates a stunning Welsh Cilt or Ladies Skirt.
Universal Tartan
Powys County is a universal tartan, which means it is not associated with any specific clan or family and can be worn by anyone!
