About The Melville Modern Tartan
Clan Melville is a Lowland Scottish family of Norman origin, taking its name from the barony of Maleville in Normandy. The Melvilles settled in Scotland during the 12th century under King David I, receiving lands in Fife, Mid Lothian, and later Orkney.
The Melvilles rose to considerable influence, especially through military and political service. The most prominent figure in the clan's history is George Melville, 1st Earl of Melville, who was an influential statesman during the reign of William III.
Melville House in Fife served as the family seat for generations and still stands today as a historic landmark.
