About The MacBean Ancient Tartan
Clan MacBean (also spelled MacBain) is a proud Highland clan and one of the oldest branches of the historic Clan Chattan Confederation, a powerful alliance of clans in the central Highlands. The name MacBean derives from the Gaelic "Mac Bheathain", meaning "son of Beathan" - Beathan itself meaning "life" or "lively one. "
The MacBeans are believed to have arrived in Scotland from Ireland during the early medieval period and later settled in Inverness-shire, particularly around Dores and Loch Ness. They gained renown for their fierce loyalty and military prowess.
A famous MacBean, Gillies MacBean, was celebrated for his heroic last stand at the Battle of Culloden in 1746 while fighting for the Jacobite cause.
