About The MacArthur Modern Tartan
Clan MacArthur is one of the oldest and most distinguished Highland clans, with ancestry that traces back to the ancient Kings of Dalriada and early Celtic Scotland. The name comes from the Gaelic "MacArtair", meaning "son of Arthur," and the clan was once among the most powerful branches of the great Clan Campbell in Argyllshire.
During the 14th century, the MacArthurs rivalled the Campbells in influence and landownership, with their chiefs holding the position of hereditary pipers to the MacDonalds of Islay. However, their fortunes declined in the 15th century when much of their land was forfeited to the Campbells by royal decree.
Despite this, the clan endured and continued to maintain its identity and traditions.
