About The Johnstone Muted Tartan
Clan Johnstone is a powerful and historically significant Border clan from the Dumfriesshire region of southwest Scotland. The clan takes its name from the lands near Johnstone in Annandale and rose to prominence during the 13th century.
Fierce defenders of their territory, the Johnstones were deeply involved in centuries of border feuds, most notably with the rival Clan Maxwell. Their seat was the formidable Lochwood Tower, and they served as Wardens of the Western Marches-a critical post in maintaining (and often challenging) peace along the Anglo-Scottish border.
The Johnstones were later elevated to nobility, with the creation of the title Marquess of Annandale.
