About The Hepburn Ancient Tartan
Clan Hepburn is an ancient Lowland Scottish clan originating from the borders of East Lothian and Berwickshire. The clan name derives from the lands of Hepburn near the River Tyne.
Hepburns were influential landowners and warriors, playing important roles in Scottish medieval history, particularly during the Wars of Scottish Independence and the turbulent border conflicts. The clan seat was at Hepburn Castle (now largely ruined), and the family produced notable figures such as James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, famously the third husband of Mary, Queen of Scots.
