About The Davies / Davis Tartan

The Welsh Davies surname is a patronymic, meaning son of David. A biblical name adopted by early Welsh Christians; also the name of the patron saint of Wales. Dewi (David) March 1st is St David's day celebrated by Welsh people all over the world.

The Latin version Davidus led to the Welsh versions Dewydd and Dewi, but Dafydd is more widely used. Thought to be the 3rd most popular surname in Wales and in use throughout the entire English speaking world as Davies and also Davis. The spelling 'Davis' is predominantly found in the USA.

One of the most famous bearers of the forename in Wales was David ap Gruffydd, the last Prince of North Wales, who was executed around 1283 by King Edward I of England.

There are numerous accounts of Davies' arriving in what is now of course the USA from the 1620's, Canada from the 1780's and Australia and New Zealand in the 1820's. Davies's and their families have certainly travelled, as a result, the name is one of the most popular in the English speaking world today. We are proud to say it originates here in Wales!
