About The Cunningham Muted Tartan

Clan Cunningham is a proud Lowland Scottish clan with deep roots in Ayrshire and Renfrewshire, particularly around the district of Cunninghame in North Ayrshire, from which the name is derived. The family rose to prominence in the 12th century, with early connections to the Scottish royal court.

They were long-time rivals of the Montgomeries, with whom they feuded violently for centuries - most notably over the position of Baillie of Cunninghame. The Cunninghams supported the Scottish Reformation and were staunch Protestants, gaining influence and titles during the reigns of James VI and Charles I.

The chief line was ennobled as Earls of Glencairn, and Clan Cunningham remains active today with an officially recognized chief and a registered tartan.
