About The Cumming Hunting Modern Tartan
Clan Cumming - also known historically as Clan Comyn - was once one of the most powerful families in medieval Scotland. Of Norman origin, the Comyns arrived in Scotland in the 12th century and quickly rose to prominence, securing titles and vast estates across Badenoch, Buchan, and other regions.
Several members of the clan held the influential position of Guardian of Scotland during the Wars of Scottish Independence. However, the clan's power declined sharply after the infamous killing of John "the Red" Comyn by Robert the Bruce in 1306 - an act that helped Bruce seize the throne but led to the forfeiture of most Comyn lands.
Despite this fall from national power, the name Cumming survived, particularly in the northeast of Scotland, where the family remained respected and influential.
