About The Comyn Ancient Tartan
Clan Comyn (also spelled Cumming) was once one of the most powerful families in medieval Scotland. Of Norman origin, the Comyns rose to prominence in the 13th century, acquiring vast lands across the north and south of Scotland, including Badenoch and Buchan.
They were closely linked to the royal family and held titles such as Guardian of Scotland during the succession crisis following the death of Alexander III. Their power rivaled that of the Bruces, and their rivalry came to a head when Robert the Bruce killed John "the Red" Comyn in 1306 at Greyfriars Church in Dumfries - an act that triggered Bruce's eventual rise to the throne.
After this, the Comyns lost much of their power and lands, but their name lives on, particularly in the north-east where the Cumming variant is still common.
