About The Mowat Modern Tartan
Clan Mowat is an ancient Scottish clan with Norman origins, believed to have settled in Scotland during the 12th century. The name is thought to derive from the Norman "Monte Alto" (meaning "high hill"), which evolved into various spellings over time.
The Mowats established themselves primarily in the northeast of Scotland, especially around Aberdeenshire and Caithness. Clan Mowat has a long history of military service and loyalty to the Scottish crown.
One of the earliest recorded members, Michael de Monte Alto, was sheriff of Cromarty under King Alexander II. The family later became hereditary sheriffs of Caithness and held lands at Freswick.
