About The Maxwell Modern Tartan
Clan Maxwell is a distinguished Lowland Scottish clan with deep historical roots in the Scottish Borders, particularly around Dumfriesshire. The name is believed to come from "Maccus' Well," a location near the River Tweed associated with an early Norse settler named Maccus in the 12th century.
From this, the Maxwell family rose to prominence as powerful landowners and loyal supporters of the Scottish crown. Throughout the centuries, the Maxwells played pivotal roles in Scottish history, serving as Wardens of the West March and often clashing with English forces during the Border conflicts.
The clan was later involved in the Jacobite uprisings, further cementing their legacy as key players in Scotland's turbulent past.
