About The MacDougall Modern Tartan
Clan MacDougall is a historic Highland clan with ancient origins tracing back to Dougall, son of Somerled, a 12th-century Norse-Gaelic lord. The MacDougalls held extensive lands in Argyllshire, particularly around Lorne and Loch Awe, and were once powerful rivals of Clan Campbell and Clan MacDonald.
The MacDougalls played key roles in Scottish medieval history, including support for the Comyn family during the Wars of Scottish Independence.
The clan's seat was historically Dunstaffnage Castle, a formidable fortress overlooking the sea. The MacDougall tartan is distinctive and widely worn by descendants and those connected to the clan.
