About The Lamont Ancient Tartan
Clan Lamont is an ancient Highland clan with Norse-Gaelic origins, descending from the royal house of the Irish kingdom of Dál Riata. The name Lamont comes from the Old Norse Logmaðr, meaning "lawman" or "man of law," reflecting early Scandinavian influence in Argyll, where the clan was based.
Historically, the Lamonts held lands in Cowal, opposite the Isle of Bute, and were once one of the most powerful clans in the western Highlands. Clan Lamont's fortunes declined sharply in the 17th century after the Dunoon Massacre of 1646, when hundreds of Lamonts were killed by their rivals, Clan Campbell.
Despite this tragedy, the clan endured and continues to preserve its heritage today through an active clan society.
