About The Elliot Modern Tartan

Clan Elliot is a well-known Border Reiver clan from the turbulent Scottish-English frontier, particularly rooted in Liddesdale and the Scottish Borders. The Elliots were one of the four great riding clans (alongside Armstrong, Nixon, and Crozier) who were infamous in the 15th and 16th centuries for their fierce independence, skilled horsemanship, and frequent raids across the Anglo-Scottish border.

The origin of the name is uncertain, but it may derive from the Old English Æliot or the French Eliot. By the late medieval period, the Elliots were firmly established in the Borders and were staunch supporters of the Scottish Crown.

In 1603, after the Union of the Crowns, King James VI cracked down on Border lawlessness, leading to the suppression and scattering of many reiver families, including the Elliots.
