About The Douglas Ancient Tartan
Clan Douglas is one of the great noble families of Scotland, with a legacy of power, military prowess, and political influence that spans centuries. The name Douglas is believed to derive from the Gaelic Dubh glas, meaning "dark water," referencing the area in Lanarkshire where the family first settled.
Rising to prominence in the 13th and 14th centuries, the Douglases were key figures in the Wars of Scottish Independence, with Sir James "The Black Douglas" becoming a legendary companion of Robert the Bruce. At their height, the Douglas family controlled vast lands and held titles including Earls of Douglas, Earls of Angus, and Marquesses of Queensberry.
The clan later split into two major branches: the Black Douglases and the Red Douglases (Earls of Angus). Though embroiled in several power struggles with the crown, the family remained central to Scottish history.
