Culloden Ancient

About The Culloden Ancient Tartan

Culloden is best known as the site of the Battle of Culloden, fought on April 16, 1746. This battle marked the end of the Jacobite risings, when the Jacobite army - largely composed of Highland clans loyal to Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) - was crushed by the government forces under the Duke of Cumberland.

The defeat at Culloden had a devastating impact on the Highland way of life, leading to the banning of tartans, bagpipes, and clan gatherings in the aftermath. It is a place of immense historical significance, especially for those descended from Jacobite-supporting clans.

Many clans fought at Culloden, including for the Jacobites: Clan Fraser, Clan MacDonald (Glengarry, Clanranald, Keppoch), Clan Cameron, Clan MacLean, Clan Stewart of Appin, and others. For the Government; Clan Munro, Clan Campbell, Clan Sutherland, Clan MacKay, among others.

Universal Tartan

Culloden Ancient is a universal tartan, which means it is not associated with any specific clan or family and can be worn by anyone!
