About The Craig Modern Tartan

Clan Craig is a Lowland Scottish surname with ancient roots, derived from the Gaelic word creag, meaning "rock" or "crag. " The name originally referred to someone who lived near a steep or rugged rock formation.

While Craig was never one of the major Highland clans and is not currently recognized as a clan with a chief under Scots law, it was a well-established family in the north-east, particularly in Aberdeenshire and the surrounding regions. One of the most notable figures was Sir Thomas Craig of Riccarton, a 16th-century jurist and authority on Scottish feudal law.

Though not officially part of another clan, some sources have historically listed Craig as a sept of Clan MacGregor, though this is debated.
