About The Cooper Modern Tartan

The surname Cooper is occupational in origin, deriving from the Middle English word couper or cowper, meaning barrel maker or craftsman of wooden vessels. While it's a common name across England and Scotland, in a Scottish clan context, the name Cooper is most often regarded as a sept of Clan MacGregor, one of the most storied and resilient clans in Highland history.

Some sources also link it loosely to Clan MacCuish or the regional Fife families. While there is no formally recognized Clan Cooper with its own chief, those bearing the Cooper name are traditionally permitted to wear the MacGregor tartan.

Many Coopers settled in Angus, Fife, and the Lowlands, and the name remains widespread today
