About The Kerr Red Weathered Tartan
Clan Kerr is a prominent and historic Scottish Border clan, with strongholds in Roxburghshire and the eastern Borders. The name Kerr (also spelled Ker) is thought to derive from the Old Norse kjarr, meaning "wet ground" or "marshland," describing the terrain of the family's early lands.
The Kerrs were fierce warriors and one of the most influential riding clans during the turbulent times of the Border Reivers. Two main branches developed: the Kerrs of Ferniehirst and the Kerrs of Cessford, both of whom held considerable power.
Members of the clan frequently held high-ranking positions, including the Duke of Roxburghe and the Marquess of Lothian. A famous tradition claims that many Kerrs were left-handed, so much so that some spiral staircases in Kerr castles were built to give a left-handed swordsman the advantage.
