Pope
A bit about this tartan...
The Pope tartan. The first recorded spelling of 'Pope' as a family name was in 1287. There are thought to be a couple of thousand Welsh people with the surname Pope in Wales today, a few more than in Scotland where the name is said to have originated. It is derived from the word 'Papa' meaning father and linked to the Latin word for Bishop, 'Pope'. Through emigration to North America from Wales and Scotland, the name is far more widely spread in the USA than in the UK today, with around 80,000 American 'Popes'.
